RYC at the Lightning North American Championship for Women, Juniors and Masters
The Metedeconk River Yacht Club in Brick NJ held the Lighting North American Championships on August 2-4 2017. Mary Keppel, past RYC Commodore, put together a race team for the North American Lighting regatta. Mary got Gary Hoffer to spend two weekends to help tune her rig. For crew she recruited Victoria Guidi and Katie Park-Myers. Victoria, originally from Raritan NJ who has been sailing since she was a kid and is a former sailing coach for the El Salvador National Federation Sailing team, skippered while Mary and Katie crewed. The RYC ladies had a bad first day of racing while getting in sync said Mary, but got back into the hunt against some serious competition. • The RYC women took on Jody Starck and Debbie Probst from the Buffalo Canoe Club. Jody was the Rolex Yachtswoman of the year in 1989, 2004 and 2013, and she finished second in the Worlds in front of Billy Martin in 2015. Debbie won the 2016 Lighting North American Championship. Both Debbie and Jody also finished second as crew in 70th Winter Lighting Championship in St Petersburg, FL. • The RYC ladies beat Jody Stark three times out of the seven race series and Debbie once and they were in second place behind Jody and ahead of Debbie in race six when they fouled their spinnaker and had to take that race as a throw out. • The RYC women finished the WJM North American Lighting Championship regatta in fifth place. • Also, former RYC member Richard Moyer with RYC members Gary Swangler and Chappy Hopkins finished 11th in the Masters and was the same team from the 70th Winter Lighting Championship in St Petersburg FL where they finished 19th. • No Juniors from RYC participated in the WJM N.A. Championships.• The RYC Women and men Masters did well against some very serious competition at the 2017 Lighting WJM North American Championships-congratulations.

The Racquet Club of Philadelphia's sailing club invited a few area clubs to their annual "Dark and Stormy Regatta" April 5th. Ryan Lippincott creator and master builder of the "Pool Penguin" brought 7 of his radio controlled boats to the event. Sailing on a 30'x30' pool with 9 large fans creating the wind, dozens participated in the racing, many who had little sailing experience. Thanks to Nick Mortgu who, in between imbibing a dark n' stormy or two, helped teach a boat load of those new to radio controlled sailing. As a thank you RYC will host RCoP on a Wednesday night in June.
